Kenley Way Finding Scheme Fingerpost Sign
Kenley Way Finding Project

Iris Graphics Ltd. collaborated with Croydon Council and Meristem Design Ltd on a comprehensive way-finding signage project aimed at enhancing navigation and information access throughout the Kenley area. The council provided the design brief and specific aesthetic elements, entrusting Iris Graphics with the manufacturing and installation phases.

The primary purpose of the way-finding scheme was to enhance visitor experience and promote local attractions within Kenley. The signage strategically guides visitors from key transportation hubs (train stations) to popular destinations such as the Kenley Aerodrome, Kenley Common, and other points of interest. By providing clear directions and distances, the signage encourages exploration of the area and facilitates access to local businesses and amenities. The placement of signs was meticulously planned to ensure visibility and relevance at decision points, minimizing confusion and maximizing the effectiveness of the way-finding system.

The project involved many signs pointing in different directions. Iris Graphics used the OctaPoint system, which allowed for up to eight sign arms on each post. This made it easy to customize the signs for each location. When fewer arms were needed, covers were used to keep the signs looking neat. All signs were made with strong aluminum and securely attached to posts for long-lasting use.

A significant challenge arose from the geographical distance between Iris Graphics’ York-based facility and the Kenley installation site.
To make sure the signs pointed the right way, we used 3D computer models and digital maps. This helped us plan the exact placement of each sign before they were put in place.

Iris Graphics maintained close communication with Croydon Council and Meristem Design throughout the project. A comprehensive PDF file was created, detailing each of the 18 signs and incorporating interactive links to 3D representations. This allowed the customer to thoroughly review and approve the designs before manufacturing commenced, fostering transparency and ensuring alignment with the project’s goals.

The Kenley signage project was a success. The signs are easy to understand, which helps both residents and visitors find their way. Iris Graphics used high-quality materials and smart planning to make sure the signs were installed smoothly and look great together. They overcame the challenge of working from far away and kept the council involved throughout the project, showing their dedication to getting things right.

We received very positive feedback from the customer for our efficient project management and high-quality workmanship, resulting in a way-finding system that effectively serves the Kenley community.
